Head Instructor Position Description

 

Reporting to:                       Summer Program Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor

Accountable to:                 Executive Director

Normal Hours Worked:     8:45 am – 1:15 pm (rain or shine)

Seven Weeks          July 4 – August 18, 2017 inclusive (Monday to Friday)

                                                            (with the exception of August 1st, Civic holiday)

Position Summary

The Head Instructor’s primary responsibility is to design and administer a first class summer tennis program at their designated site in a professional, courteous and enthusiastic manner. As such, the Site Coordinator/Head Instructor has an impact on the development of Ontario youth, and the reputation of the Philpott Children’s Tennis program through the spirit and image of the sport of tennis.

He/she is expected to organize and prepare lessons for each day of instruction.

The Philpott organization will try to meet your request regarding site location but reserves the right to move a Head Instructor as required to meet the needs of the total summer program.

 

Duties

Administration

  • Attend pre-season orientation meetings prior to camp commencement, one evening and one full day and August 18th wrap up meeting
  • Arrive at 8:45 am to set up and organize equipment, take attendance
  • In case of rain or threatening rain, never leave the site unless specifically given permission to do so by the Summer Program Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor
  • Provide accurate attendance, incident and equipment inventory reports
  • Store equipment and first aid kits securely
  • Report concerns/problems immediately to the Summer Program Director or Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor
  • Introduce and follow through with Awards Program, as required

 

Public Relations

  • Liaise with the Parks & Recreation (or other) representative on site
  • Wear shirts provided by Philpott when instructing
  • Post banner and/or posters to advertise the program
  • When appropriate, speak with parents and prospective students
  • Encourage children to bring friends and introduce them to tennis
  • If classes are not full, approach local organizations (camps/daycares)

Human Resources

  • Responsible for coordinating program objectives and daily activities with Assistant Instructor
  • Responsible for the training and supervision of volunteers

 

Instruction and Coaching

  • Prepare and submit to Summer Program Director a complete 7-week lesson plan
  • Plan units which will prepare the children for the Awards Program
  • Plan and execute each day’s lessons with suitable progressions and drills to meet the needs of the children and the group

 

Operations

  • Ensure that a safe environment is maintained at the court site (i.e. not playing on wet courts)
  • Report safety problems immediately to local Parks, Forestry & Recreation representative and to the Summer Program Director or Assistant
  • Be knowledgeable about the emergency procedures of the community centre

 

Job Specification / Qualifications Required

  • Level 1 OTA Coaching Certificate
  • Volunteer or coaching experience in sport
  • Clean police reference check (provided by applicant upon job offer – please visit www.torontopolice.on.ca/recordsmanagement/clearance.php)
  • Sign a Philpott Risk Management Form (provided to applicant upon job offer)
  • First aid training desired
  • Fluent in English, both oral and written
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal and administrative skills
  • Neat appearance, willingness to conform to Philpott dress standards that includes tennis specific court shoes, Philpott shirts, and appropriate tennis shorts/warm up suits.
